Rail Medicals

At BeWorkFit, we provide comprehensive Rail Worker Safety Medicals in line with national legislation and rail industry standards—ensuring your team is fit for duty and compliant with health and safety regulations.

Under the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers (NTC – October 2012), all rail transport operators must implement a health and fitness program for their staff. Our assessments are designed to support this requirement.

Authorised Health Professional

Dr Manda Brits is an appointed Authorised Health Professional (AHP), qualified to perform rail health assessments across all risk categories.

Rail Medical Categories

We provide assessments for all three categories of rail safety work:

Category 1 & 2 – Safety Critical Workers

Required at:

  • Pre-placement

  • Every 5 years (to age 50)

  • Every 2 years (age 50–59)

  • Annually (from age 60)

Category 3 – Around-the-Track Workers

Required at:

  • Pre-placement

  • Age 40

  • Every 5 years thereafter

These medicals assess a worker’s fitness to safely perform the duties of their role and ensure the risk level of the job matches their health status.

Triggered Health Assessments

In addition to periodic checks, we also conduct triggered health assessments—prompted by incidents, health concerns, or patterns of absenteeism. These assessments allow for early intervention and are critical for managing sudden or evolving health issues that could affect safety.

Common triggers include:

  • Recommendations from an AHP

  • Repeated sick leave or absences

  • Workplace incidents or near misses

  • Employee requests

BeWorkFit is committed to providing prompt, professional service and clear reporting—helping rail operators and employees meet their safety obligations with confidence.
